This morning while I participated in the Alzheimer's Memory Walk, and then hosted the crop at our house from 10 - 6, Chris was in Ballanger watching Aspen run in her second cross country meet.
Aspen rode the bus to the meet, with her teammates. Along the way, when they were almost to the school, the coach informed them that instead of running one mile (which we thought was standard for junior high), they today were going to run two miles. Well, Aspen freaked out. She expected one thing, and this threw her for a big loop. She was an instant bundle of nerves.
We tried explaining to her that two miles wouldn't be a big deal for HER. That she trains by running many more miles than that. That these other girls might be good at the one mile, but might not have the endurance she has for longer distances. While she is good at the mile, she seems to get even better with longer distances...
So, she ran her race. Chris ran pretty much the entire course with her, and gave her encouragement along the way. She ended up running a 14:06 time, and came in second!!!!!!
Chris was so excited when he called me! I could hear him beaming with pride. It was a sprint for the finish, and Aspen just missed the first place honor. But second place!! That is her best place so far, and according to Chris, her best race ever.
She's learning more about the art of "racing", and it's showing. Chris said she had a very smart race. That when they got to the hills and everyone else was slowing down, Aspen speeded ahead and passed a ton of them. She's finding her competitive drive, and it's making her excel. It's so dang exciting to watch her come into her own with this sport. She's a natural, and we are excited to see where she takes it...
Congrats to Ms. Aspen and her outstanding efforts today. We love you!!! We are very very proud of you...

p.s. Obviously, no pictures from today's race...I wasn't there, unfortunately, and Chris was too busy running the 2 mile course beside her :)
