duckies & sperrys

I thought it would be fun to do a little comparison...on how things are so cool when you're a certain age...you've just got to have something because all the girls have it...being young, it's all about fitting in and having what everyone else has...

I was no exception. When I was in the 6th grade, every girl in my group of friends owned a pair of shoes similar to the ones below. I had a pretty difficult time finding a photo that looked like the ones we wore. I asked my friend Amy what those shoes were called, and she thought they were Duckies. I was thinking it had something to do with ducks myself. A search showed me nothing though. This was the best I could find...

Brown leather. Brown and mustard yellow shoelaces. And those laces were not tied. Instead they were knotted on each side, at the top. We wore these shoes with everything. Bluejeans. Shorts. Everything. I remember wanting a pair of these so badly. And when my parents gave in and let me join the bandwagon, I wore them nearly every day. And then...my dog at the time, Sheeba, chewed on one of them and ruined it...I was devastated. No more bandwagon for me.

This, of course, was a distant memory locked away in the fault all this time. Until recently.

Aspen started talking about "Sperry". As in "I've got to have some Sperrys!" I had no idea what she was talking about. And then I found out...it was a shoe. And not just any shoe...a shoe very similar to the ones I used to wear. Only now, these come in different colors, and apparently with patterns, etc. I am personally not a big fan of the shoes, but I do have to chuckle as things come full circle.
She received some Sperrys for Christmas from her mom...not actual Sperrys, but something very similar. And now that I know what they are, I'm seeing them everywhere. High school kids. College kids. Aren't fads funny?

What kind of shoe will Aspen's one-day daughter just have to have??

WOW! I hadn't even thought of Duckies since I wore them and now they are back. I don't think I'll be buying any Sperry's.

Isn't it crazy!! We called them Duck Shoes. I'm kind of digging the Sperrys myself!! Not sure if I would fit into the crowd that is wearing them, but I could always give it a try! lol

I think we called them Duck shoes, too. It's crazy how the styles comes around.

I remember that style of shoe, but I don't remember them every being called Duckies. Of course, every one of my high school friends might remember that, I have a bad habit of blocking out past memories, especially high school for some reason! I wonder what Ashleigh and Abby will "have to have." I'm sure I'll be buying two of everything!
