napa - berringer & sterling

Today's photos -- our first two wineries! Berringer and Sterling...

First was Berringer...we were a tad late to our scheduled tour, but we were able to jump in a few minutes late and still enjoyed the tour.

This is the entrance to their caves, where their wine is stored.

Chris, with a HUGE bottle of wine! At one point, this bottle of Berringer wine was the biggest bottle in the world. It has since been surpassed!!

Me, with a row of barrels in the cave.

After touring inside, we were brought outside to see some of their grape vines...got a close up of some grapes, as well as some of Chris in the vine rows.

This is our tour guide Tim -- he was very knowledgeable and we actually learned a lot from him during the tasting!

Tim led us into the tasting room, which held a long table set up with wine glasses and a little place that had Lays potato chips, a square of mild swiss cheese, and a white chocolate/orange truffle. He explained to us how different flavors of food affect the taste of wines. That's why it is important to pair wines properly with certain foods.

Love this picture of us! :) Aren't we cute? :)

After Berringer, we headed to Sterling Vineyards. We did a self guided tour there.

Sterling had a very modern, fresh feel. The building was white and classy. Everything was streamlined and beautiful. Minimalist. It sits on top of a large hill, and here is a view from the tram building...

From the Welcome Center to the winery, we rode a little tram across a wire. I thought Chris might be a bit unsettled by it, since he doesn't like heights. But it didn't even phase him :)

There were great views to be had from this little tram...

Rows and rows of grape vines every direction you look, all over Napa...

Here I am, with the red wine barrels.

Here is Chris with the white wine stainless barrels. White wine doesn't go in the oak barrels because only red wines have that oak-y flavor.

Sterling produces a LOT of wine...each barrel holds 300 bottles of wine.

Enjoying a glass of wine of their terrace, isn't that view gorgeous!!!

The two of us at Sterling...I love us!

After we toured Sterling, we enjoyed our picnic lunch at a roadside picnic area...then we rushed off to two additional wineries...coming next!
