back up

...back up, back up, back up!!!!!!!!

For two intelligent people, Chris and I are a bunch of doofs. WHY have we never backed anything on our computer up???????????? Why why why????

Friday night, Chris stayed up working on a website after I went to bed. Saturday morning, I woke up to discover the news that the night before, our computer had the "blue screen of death", and that when he tried to restart it, it said there were problems with the hard drive.

Sh*t!!!!!!!!!!

What we both know, and are trying to avoid facing, is that EVERYTHING is on that computer. And NONE of it is backed up. Everything for our company: our logos, stationery, all the websites he's done, all of the jobs I've done. All of our accounting for the company. ALL of our pictures. All of them.

Chris tried a ton of stuff yesterday, and none of it worked. Our last hope is a coworker who has some software that may be able to retrieve the hard drive stuff. Oh please oh please, let that work. Everyone cross their fingers.

If we can just get our stuff off there, we'll get a new hard drive. And we won't be STUPID anymore and we'll back things up with a vengence! We swear!!!!!

Makes me sick to my stomach. Sh*t!!!!!!

We had problems in the past with blue screen errors and hard drive problems (which is why I switched to a Mac). We had success calling the computer's customer service # (we had a Dell at the time) and they talked us through how to get the computer started up in another mode so we could restore it back to a time before the incident occurred. That worked for us. I don't remember how to do it because it was a few years ago when that happened. I am still convinced we had some nasty viruses floating around in there. Those things can kill your computer.

I really hope your friend can help. I regularly back up my files, usually every couple months. Even sooner for photos.

Hope everything works out for you guys!!!! :)

Ok...I'm a geek....If you can get the thing to start in safe-mode, do it and back it up from there. If not, I pray pray pray that your guy is a savy technician and can extract stuff from that hard drive by slaving it to another one. If he can't, find somebody who is a good technician. Most of the time, you can still get to the old files - even when there is a virus - if the tech is good and has the right equipment.

I work in IT, but when this happened to me, I didn't even attempt it myself. I made the techs at work do it. They know what they are doing and have to do that stuff all the time.
GOOD LUCK!
