kern

Okay...I am a graphic designer...and to me, this hoodie is fabulous! I cracked up laughing when I saw it last night on the Veer website! If it wasn't $70, I would've bought it right away.

Most of you out there are asking, "What the hell does KERN mean?"

That's what makes it even better! :)

Here's my definition for you: when you typeset something on the computer (such as your journaling on your scrapbook page), kerning is the space between each letter. The computer will automatically define what the kerning should be between each letter, but this is NOT necessarily the proper or best looking solution.

As a non-graphic designer, have you ever noticed the awkward spacing between letters? On a scrapbook layout? On a magazine ad? Anywhere? Most likely not. As a graphic designer, lack of kerning drives me nuts!

A few years ago, I worked under a very talented art director, and I learned so much from him. I can still hear him preaching, "The difference between a good designer and a great designer is in the kerning." I still believe that. Lack of kerning looks unprofessional and sloppy to me. It tells me that the designer did not take the effort to make it look as good as it could.

So, here's the thing I think is so hilarious about the hoodie...the zipper of the sweatshirt runs down between the E and the R of the word, causing there to be more space there than needs to be. That is a space that needs to be kerned, it is too wide. Ha! So clever...

Okay, I'm done being a design geek! Thanks for allowing me my moment!

OMG Kelley - that is a trip. I remember when YOU taught me about Kerning!!!! This is priceless. I would buy one to if they weren't 70 bucks! Maybe they will reduce the price soon.
