trauma

:: Well, it's been an interesting  24 hours!

:: After I blogged last night, Poppy started throwing up. Which wasn't too troubling, except it smelled like chocolate. Chocolate is poison to a dog's system. Apparently, milk chocolate isn't too bad, but dark chocolate is pretty bad and baking chocolate is the worst. The thing is -- we had no idea where she had gotten chocolate. We don't ever have chocolate in the house really, and Mimi's candy dish was still full. We left it alone for a bit. Then she jumped up on my lap awhile later and her heart was beating so fast it scared me immediately. Fast and hard. Which, google told me, was a side effect of chocolate in dogs. Hm. Upon debate, we decided to take her in to the emergency vet. By now it was 10:00 and the checked her out. Her heart had slowed thankfully. And we had finally determined that Poppy had drunk a good quantity of Aspen's dark hot chocolate that she had left on the end table by the couch. Poppy had chocolate dried to her ears, which was further evidence that she had stuck her head in the mug. We aren't sure how much she actually drank, but the vet said it was better for her to drink it than eat it solid. So that is good. They kept her until 7:30 and ran an iv and gave her charcoal something or other to help draw out the toxins. I picked her up at 7:30 and brought her home, then dropped her off at our vet on the way to work. They wanted to observe her all day and she seems to be fine. Thankfully! That was quite a scary deal. And a $0.50 cup of hot chocolate turned into quite an expensive cup of hot chocolate. But she is good. She has a little bandage on her leg where the iv was in, but that comes out in about an hour. I believe that all is well, and hopefully Aspen has learned to not leave chocolate where the dogs can get it.

:: Made it to bed at midnight and up early at 6:00 so I could go get Poppy -- that makes for one tired Kelley! :) I took a quick nap at lunch, but am ready for a good sleep this evening.

:: Work is INSANE right now. Trying to keep the overwhelmed feeling at bay as long as possible.

:: Need to work on the Christmas card!!!! :)

Poor Poppy...chocolate is just not good for our furry friends. Hoping for a more quiet night for all.
