while we were away

So...

While we were away, it seems a bit of hell broke loose!

I was standing at the finish line of the marathon, camera poised, waiting for Chris to come through. He was moments away. My phone rang...

It was Aspen, crying. Saying, "Something very serious has happened!" My first thoughts were that something had happened to Mimi, or to one of the dogs. I knew she was probably okay since she was the one calling.

She began to explain what happened..."I was walking into the kitchen, trailing my hand along the granite of the bar. And A HUGE HUNK OF IT JUST FELL OFF!"

I could not believe what I was hearing? A piece of granite fell off? I knew it had to be a pretty big hunk, because I could visualize where the pieces were butted together. I told her there was nothing I could do about it from 4 hours away, and that Daddy was about to come through. We'd have to deal with it when we got home.

After a long drive home, we walked in to see this:

Can you see in this photo, where the black granite ends and leaves a big empty area on the right? Yep...a huge chunk.

This sucker is HEAVY. It makes me amazed that it's stayed up as long as it has. It makes me leery of how long the other pieces are going to stay up. More than half of the width sticks out over the bar area, and it looks like it was just GLUED onto the wall. With no supports or anything. Just those two little pieces there in the corner are heavy...I can't imagine how heavy that whole piece is.

And of course, when the slab fell to the ground, it messed up the tile where it landed. Lovely.

The builders will be receiving a phone call. It obviously needs to be fixed, and supports need to be added to the existing counter.

More than anything, we are lucky that this huge slab didn't land on someone's foot as it fell. Or worse yet, onto one of the dogs. That slab would have killed Ocho instantly.

If it's not one thing, it's forty seven other things...

oh my goodness! Okay - ignore my comment on Facebook about a paper weight. I would be pissed too! Thank goodness it didn't land on anything (or anyone).
