At lunch today, I had nothing to read...so I pulled out one of Chris' "men's magazines" and thought I would see what men like to read about.
Interesting enough, it's pretty similar to a woman's magazine. There were even a few recipes in there! Nutrition, even. Hmm!
There were a few things that stood out that I had to share...one was the list of "buddies" everyone should have. Just Friends (surface friends like coworkers), Rust Friends (old friends that knew you when), Trust Friends (very good friends that you can tell anything), and Must Friends (friends you're so close to you would call them in an emergency). Interesting, yes? And pretty true.
There was also the tidbit about "what the food industry doesn't want you to know." Oh my, you know that I was all into reading that article!
You probably don't want to know this stuff...but I'm going to tell you anyway!
:: Having a label like, "33% less fat" only means that they've pumped it fuller of carbs. They took away 1 gram of fat to replace it with 3 grams of sugar and flour. Lovely.
:: Your food can legally contain maggots. YES, MAGGOTS. The FDA limits the acceptable amount, but there is still a limit and that limit is not zero! There are also things like fly eggs and rodent hairs and insect fragments...that makes me want to never eat anything again. Lovely.
:: The American Heart Association makes companies pay for that little checkmark of AHA certification...so just because a certain food doesn't have that checkmark, it doesn't mean it isn't just as healthy as the food that does...they just didn't pay AHA. Lovely.
:: Food additives and artificial food colorings in foods like Skittles and soft drinks causes kids to misbehave and be hyperactive. Hmm...that explains why so many people think their kids have ADD...it's just the crap they're eating! Lovely.
:: Often times, the meat industry takes a lean cuts of meat, which tend to lose juciness when the fat is removed, and enhance it by pumping them full of solutions that help with flavor. Bad thing is that it really ups the level of sodium in the meat.
:: And finally...calorie counts...they are often wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. Seems like not much in the food industry can be trusted. Lovely.
Okay, time to watch Idol!

I had actually heard several of those food issues before. It really is sad isn't it? We trust so openly, but yet perhaps we shouldn't??
Ms. Kelley,
You are quite informative today--I think I will just chew on my Edamome podes!!!!
