Maui Installment #3 - Zip Lining

Our very favorite part of the trip to Maui was our zip line adventure!!!!

We had discussed doing an excursion like this, but since Chris is afraid of heights, we didn't really pursue it. Then Neeley decided it was something he'd like to do, and another coworker decided she needed someone to go with too! So, we decided to spend the money and sign the four of us up. Chris promised me that if we spent the money, he would definitely go through with it...so it was set.

The day of our adventure, we met at their office, which was within walking distance of our resort. There would be twelve in our group, and after we signed the waiver and were told a few things, we all piled into a shuttle. The shuttle took us up the mountain, to their gear shack.

At the gear shack, we got out and our two guides helped us into our harness. That thing was heavy!

He's Big L helping Chris...

So, once we were all geared up, we all got back in the van and finished the ride up the mountain. Once we reached the place for our first zip, we all walked the short distance to the first platform. This is Neeley, Chris, me and Theresa.

So, first the guide tells us that we should watch him and pay close attention, and not look at our gear. And he begins to talk very very fast, saying first you do this, and then you do that, and then you hook this, etc. Then he says, "Any questions?" We all just stood there with our mouths hanging open, having no idea what we were supposed to do. Then the guide started giggling, and explained that nooooo, we would not be hooking up our own wires...they would be doing it for us. :) He got a kick out of himself on that one.

As we stood there waiting to do our first zip, we were all pretty nervous. Chris was shaking, but he was trying to not show his nerves. The guide explained to us that this was the shortest zip, and the slowest. It was basically straight across, and all we had to do was walk down the three stairs and let the harness catch. Then we'd be off!

Chris got up there, walked off those stairs, and zoomed across the valley! I was sooo proud of him! And after that, he wasn't scared one bit! There was nothing scary about it, it was just a fun adreneline rush!! We did eight different zip lines. Four, then a break for lunch, and then four more. The shortest zip was 500 feet, and the longest zip was 1100 feet. The more the line sagged, the faster you would go. It was difficult to look around and enjoy the scenery as you did the zip because you were going so fast and were worried about coming into the landing area straight. But wow!!! The zipping itself was soooo fun and the scenery from up there was breathtaking!!

Chris showing off with a hand wave!!! I had to add a bleep patch, because the harnesses were not nice to the men :)

And here I am, coming in for a landing...

So breathtaking from so high up!

Along our walk to the platform where we had our lunch, we stopped along the way to pick fresh guava fruit. Yum!! And here I am with one of the guides, Big L...he was funny! Our guides were hilarious...the little one did most of the talking, but when he wasn't around, Big L would crack some jokes too. The other guide even acted like he was a wild hog in the bushes to get us waving our arms around and scared to death!!

We were so high up in the mountains, we could practically touch the fog!

My favorite zip of the trip was zip #6...the smaller guide (sorry, I can't remember his name, it was something weird and Hawaiian!) called me Tinkerbell and asked me to step up on a stool. He asked me if I liked adreneline, and I told him yes, I loved roller coasters. So he said, ok, I am going to take care of your take off, and Big L will take care of your landing, so no worries. Then he picked me up, twirled my harness around, wrapped me into a ball, and then proceeded to throw me off the landing!!! I went twirling and spinning across that valley so fast, with no idea which end was up. It was incredible! Loved it...

Our two guides...mahalo!! They were fun...Big L, though pretty darn hefty, was doing some cool tricks on his zips...and the other one even did a back flip on take off! Zipping is like walking to them, they do it so often...they definitely made the trip a lot of fun!

And me and my hubby...we had such a great time on the zip lines!!! I'm so proud of him for facing his fear on this, and realizing that it was fun and not scary!!!
