Circa 1984 (around age 8)
Today, it was around 5:10...I was working on getting things shut down at my desk for the day. I was on my way into the equipment room to turn off the machines, and my coworker Alicia said, "Did you hear that Michael Jackson died today?"
I responded with quite a loud, "WHAT?!?!?!?!?!"
I couldn't believe it!! It was so unexpected to hear that.
Michael Jackson...the most famous man in the entire world...the man who, when I was in the third grade, I wanted so badly to marry. I had his Thriller tape, and even though the song Thriller was too scary to listen to when I was home alone, I listened to that tape so much I knew every word by heart. I knew all his dances by heart.
It's weird to think of a world without the self-proclaimed King of Pop...hmm.
As we were watching the new coverage this evening during dinner, I asked Mimi if the black man talking was Michael's father. And Aspen got this odd look on her face, and she said, "Wouldn't his dad be white?" Oh my goodness. She didn't know that Michael was black. These kids of today, they have no idea how awesome Michael Jackson used to be back in the day. Granted, he got a little weird in the later years, but if only they could have experienced him back when.
I think I now understand how people felt when Elvis died...

I too wanted so badly to marry Michael Jackson - it is said that when I was still in my Mom's tummy, I would be calm as could be until a Michael Jackson song came on, and then I would just go to kicking and dancing. I came out loving him and his music! I think he will forever be the King of Pop and maybe now the younger generation will get a taste of how great his music really was, since it is being played on every radio station.
Girl, I had that Thriller tape too and wore it OUT! You're right that none of the younger people today can really get what a big deal he was back then.
And I'm one of the many people who will say they found out about his death via Twitter of all things! Standing in the middle of my kitchen, about to start dinner.
And just like me about Elvis, my children will say they don't remember anything about when Michael Jackson died, because they were just little kids...
Thought about you when I heard it...
